A well-informed and engaged citizenry is essential to a thriving democracy. Recognizing this, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), in partnership with the Evangelical Alliance of Kenya (EAK) and the Kenya National Prayer and Transformation Movement, today joined faith leaders and other stakeholders to launch the Prayer and Civic Engagement Programme.
The initiative seeks to bring civic and voter education closer to the people by using grassroots faith networks to promote responsible citizenship, constitutional awareness and meaningful public participation.
Through the Programme, Kenyans will be encouraged to understand their constitutional rights and responsibilities, take an active role in democratic processes, and engage peacefully and constructively in issues affecting their communities and the country.
Speaking on behalf of IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon, HSC, Commissioner Dr. Alutalala Mukhwana highlighted the importance of civic education in helping citizens make informed decisions and participate meaningfully in the governance of their country. He recognized the Church's longstanding contribution to civic awareness and its ability to bring communities together around issues of national importance.
Commissioner Dr. Alutalala Mukhwana expressed his honour at being part of the launch, noting the value of bringing faith, civic responsibility and democratic engagement together in advancing national transformation.
He reaffirmed the Commission's commitment to working with EAK, the Kenya National Prayer and Transformation Movement and other faith-based organizations to expand access to civic and voter education, strengthen understanding of the Constitution, and encourage greater public participation across the country.
The partnership reflects the important role that faith-based institutions can play in helping citizens understand not only their rights, but also their responsibilities in shaping the country's democratic future.
As Kenya prepares for the 2027 General Election, the IEBC continues to encourage collaboration with stakeholders across society to build an informed electorate, promote peaceful participation and ensure that every eligible citizen has the knowledge and confidence to take part in democratic processes.
Ultimately, strengthening democracy is a shared responsibility, and partnerships that bring civic education closer to the people can help make public participation more meaningful and inclusive.
